"The topaz has been found in central Idaho in very large quantities.Some of the stones when cut are extremely brilliant. The writer has a five-carat topaz, cut from a large rough stone, which has the fire and brilliance of many diamonds.
This topaz came from the old Florence placers and was found by Otto Egloff. Mr. Egloff is a Texan, who came to Idaho many years ago. He has prospected in many sections from his native state to his present home in Lewiston.
He has accumulated a very large collection of the precious and semi-precious gems which are both interesting and valuable.
He informs, while he has been fortunate in finding these valuable stones, never yet has he found them in place. Always have they been loose, in the gold placer workings. The gems have followed the gold to the placer fields"
